Admission Process

Admission to Diploma (Polytechnic) Institutions in Odisha is strictly merit-based and centralized through a single-window online portal. The admission process is regulated by the Directorate of Technical Education & Training (DTE&T), Odisha and managed via the SAMS Odisha (Student Academic Management System) Portal.

There is no written entrance exam (formerly known as Odisha DET) for regular engineering diploma entries; selections rely entirely on the candidate’s academic performance in school.

1. Types of Entry & Eligibility Criteria
Aspirants can seek admission into government and approved private polytechnics (such as Jhadeswar Institute of Engineering & Technology – JIET) through two primary pathways:

Entry Type Minimum Academic Qualification Age Criteria Course Duration
Regular 1st Semester Pass in 10th Standard / HSC from BSE Odisha or equivalent with a minimum aggregate of 35% marks (including passing grades in Math and Science). Minimum 14 years as of July 1st. No upper age limit. 3 Years
Lateral Entry (3rd Semester) Pass in 12th Science (+2 CHSE) with PCM, 2-year ITI, or 2-year Vocational engineering trade after passing 10th. Minimum 16 years. No upper age limit. 2 Years
2. Step-by-Step Centralized Admission Process.

Step 1: Online Registration & Application Form (CAF)
    • Eligible students must visit the official website: SAMS Odisha Portal.
    • Create login credentials using a valid mobile number and email address.
    • Complete the Common Application Form (CAF) by filling in personal details, educational qualifications (10th/12th marks), and uploading requested documents.

Step 2: Online Choice Filling & Locking
    • During the CAF submission, candidates must choose their preferred choices of colleges and engineering branches (e.g., Mechanical, Electrical, Civil, or Computer Science Engineering).
  • Arrange selections in order of preference before locking the choices.
Step 3: Application Fee Payment
    • ₹300: General Category Male Applicants.
    • ₹200: SC/ST/Female Applicants.
    • Exempted (Free): Transgender individuals, orphans, and specific tribal groups (PVTG).

Step 4: Merit List Publication & Provisional Allotment.

    • SAMS Odisha prepares a centralized merit rank card purely based on aggregate marks.
    • The seat allotment results are published online in multiple subsequent rounds (Round 1, Round 2, and Spot Admission phases if vacancies exist).

Step 5: Document Verification & Final Reporting.

  • Once a seat is provisionally allotted, candidates must report to a designated Nodal Center or the respective institution for document verification.
  • Bring original mark sheets, reservation certificates (such as SEBC, SC, ST, or Green Card quotas if applicable), and the initial seat acceptance fee to secure the final allotment.
